I also have this headcanon that when Raleigh saw Newt’s tattoos, he thought they were memorial tattoos at first. He’s all soft voiced and kind when he asks if it’s a tattoo of Yamarashi - he and Yancy took out Yamarashi, but that doesn’t mean there weren’t casualties. Raleigh saw the destruction first hand and knows that they couldn’t have saved everybody (and you know the guilt eats him up inside, especially after Yancy’s death, because that’s one more failure). So he’s reaching out - I’m sorry for your loss, I know how you must feel, I was there, but at least we got the bastard.
And then Newt is so casual about it. Twenty-five hundred tons of awesome. And Raleigh sees that his sympathy is misplaced. That this guy is so far from getting it, he might as well be on another planet. Or more specifically, from the safe zone for the rich and powerful (because how else would he end up being so blase about the giant monsters who’ve been attacking the most populous region of the world for over a decade?). And Raleigh is already done with this privileged man-child.
With all the pictures and fanart I see of making Newt this woobie, cute type character, it’s refreshing to see a post that doesn’t ignore that this dude’s privilege.
While I understand everyone’s liking of Newt, watch Raleigh’s face visibly go blank after Newt says about the “tons of awesome”. Raleigh’s not a difficult guy to get along with and his commenting about the tattoos seems like someone who doesn’t even have it cross their mind that someone would get tattoos of kaiju because they LIKED them. I mean Newt literally got trigger objects tattooed on himself. If not callous, it reeks of someone who just doesn’t GET it. And when Raleigh realizes that, he shuts down. He’s still polite, but there’s an edge and he makes it clear he’s going to kill every kaiju he comes across.
I think the thing that I liked the least was that Newt acts like RALEIGH is the jerk. It’s apparent even in the movie edit where you don’t hear him call Raleigh a jerk in the face he makes when Raleigh challenges him. Newt has the unmitigated gall to judge a man who felt his brother get killed by these things for not agreeing with him or at least voicing his opinion. Newt might get it by the end, but it’s not until he sees up close just what he’s dealing with and that Raleigh is RIGHT.
Let’s also talk about how Newt is so deep into his private fanboy universe that he can random search his memory and produce facts like how much Yamarashi weighed, but cannot recognize that the person standing in front of him was on the team that took it down.
Like. Raleigh isn’t exactly a nobody, he and Yancy were likely a pretty big deal back in the day. And when Stacker introduces Newt and Hermann, he says Raleigh’s name, he says ‘Mr. Becket, this is our research team.’ Anyone even remotely attached to the PPDC should be able to put two and two together.
But in the deleted scene, which is vomit-inducing, Newt goes ‘Hey… guy!’ before launching into another masturbatory lecture on how gr10 kaiju are and calling Raleigh a jerk.
Basically Newt cares about kaiju to the point where he stops noticing people and I personally find that revolting.
